Based on the latest study from the Nielsen Norman Group readers who read actual books tend to get through content better than those who read on an e-reader. For best reading experience, Apple's iPad got a 5.8 rating on the scale of 1 to 7. On the other hand, Amazon's Kindle received a 5.7 rating closely following Apple iPad. However there are still many who favor reading on an actual paper and believe that it is the fastest to read of all. Some hardcover fans believe that the Nielsen Norman's study has just proved their point that although e-books are great still there's nothing that can replace the standard books. These hardcover folks are correct in some way or another but their thinking are very limited because they don't realize that Apple's iPad can greatly enhance their reading experience. They fail to realize that the Apple's iPad experience can dominate other reading options out there at least for now.

Apple's iPad advantages over the other reading devices are not hard to see. They're pretty obvious. Look at the big 9.7-inch screen. The vibrant display makes everything easy and readable. And more importantly, it supports graphics, color, and just about anything else a publisher can place. Obviously if you're looking for more than just a book, certainly, choose Apple's iPad.
The obvious competitor of the iPad is the Amazon Kindle which is not such a bad device either. In fact it is the first wildly successful e-reader. The reading experience that Kindle provides is arguably most book-like than any device on the market. The E Ink makes reading the title easy on the eyes. It's also responsible for making the text close to what real paper has. Most of all you don't have to stock a library.
However, there are major issues with the Kindle reader. Let's talk about the two of these major issues. Firstly, on Kindle you have to press a button to flip through pages. And this is not ideal. Also, when loading the next page of any e-paper display it takes a brief second to finish. This behavior is not annoying for short stints, but over the course of a chapter or a book it bogs down. Moreover, the grayscale display limits its usability but its very nature. All the graphics and colored displays are removed retaining only a collection of text.

There goes also the Barnes and Noble's Nook. But the same can be said for this device. It cannot compare with Apple's iPad on any level other than battery life even if it's starting to sell well for the book retailer. It is simply like the Kindle except that it is equipped with a touchscreen and a pair of options included making it separate with Kindle. Nook is a single-purpose device. It's experience is isolated - you can't have the full context of a book. Viability goes beyond simply looking at text and flipping through pages when it comes to reading beyond paper. Unlike its competition, iPad is more than just an e-reader. On iPad, users can expand their reading by getting out of the book and read on the Internet and then get back to it. While Kindle, to be honest, has an experimental Web browser, many who have actually used this feature know it's not even worth a try.
Before crowning the iPad as king of reading devices, it's also worth to note that both Amazon and Barnes and Noble deliver apps for the iPhone and iPad that enables users to access their e-book libraries and read content on those devices. Their iBook matching is a good job. Most consumers will find that the simplicity of iBooks is more viable than using Amazon's service. But still iPad gives consumers a choice of stores; for all of Apple's reputation for closed systems, its e-reader is the most open.

It's a fact that the e-reader market is very tough to gauge. Aside from the truth that it changes quickly, a basic reader costs $150 nowadays and almost all of them are awfully similar. There are many who are not fans of netbooks at all. They are especially not fans of a Linux netbook. These machines from day one were criticized as pointless by many. Now we have the iPad that has just come out. When comparing the two, it's amazing the netbook ever got bad press. I guess it depends on who is doing the comparing. People compare things to what they need mostly and not by what others need.
The iPad starts at $500, has about 8 gigabytes of space, and a fairly limited set of built in applications. For the most part people will surf the web, send some email, read documents or books, play iPhone games, and watch video on the device in an under 2 pound experience.
Compared to the first netbooks the experience is about the same. They offered devices that could surf the net, read documents, use emails, and watch some video. Even the beginning models offered 8 gigabyte and 16 gigabyte models. Between the two, they are fairly similar devices as far as functionality is concerned. But the netbook still has it's advantages.
At least with a netbook a user can install a completely different operating system, use USB technology, and have Flash based internet or any other plugin of choice. There is also some physical advantages like upgrading the ram and changing out the battery. As everyone knows it doesn't hurt to have more ram. The more the better. It could be a deciding point by some people.
It seems as if there is more bias towards devices and brands versus actually looking at the facts about what devices can do. A netbook never promised to be a full laptop any more than the iPad is promising to be any more than it is. They both seem to fill the same role when you look at their main uses and applications. Currently a quality netbook with a long battery life giving the user much more options is still much less than the cheapest iPad. Some might want to rethink the way they review devices to show what's actually going on.
When comparing the first netbooks to the iPad, the functionality is practically the same. Find out why these devices, despite some differences, are very similar. Either one can be a great choice. It really depends on what you need for yourself. At least you have a choice now which should help you very much.

Good and Bad iPad Reviews
Firstly, the name itself has caused many heads to turn with raised eyebrows. Based on some iPad reviews, certainly a well-known manufacturer of excellent IT products could have come up with a better name. Apparently, earlier options were thrown in the air and only iPad made the cut.
iPad's physical appearance is not overly spectacular. It comes with clean cut lines, smooth curves and a glossy black bezel bordering the screen. Reviewers were initially critical on the wide bezel but later accepted its practicality in avoiding accidental contact with the touch screen. Since it bears a resemblance to its family of past appliances, it reduces the learning curve.
The lack of a USB port or SD card reader, common devices in use today, is a let-down. Absence of a web camera also disallows the user from conducting video chats. Screen quality is good with its wide dimension and sharp resolution, allowing the user to read and watch content with clarity.
Once again, being built on the same operating system as its family of appliances, iPad interface is easy learning for past users. For first time users, the interface may take some getting used to as iPad doesn't follow the conventional method of files, folders and windows. Lack of multi-tasking abilities is also a perplexing issue for most users.
Since its built-in web browser doesn't support the most common platform for rich media experience, iPad reviews are disappointing when viewing other sites' pages built on this platform. Fortunately, iPad interface is good for reading e-books with its friendly layout, clear display, built-in dictionary, easy search and bookmark options. Viewing of streaming videos is great via its large screen.
Its compatibility with other apps within its family of devices provides a seamless experience as the user is able to synchronize information between iPad and these other devices. Third party applications come aplenty, chargeable or free. Some apps work really well for readers of news publications and comics, whereas others focus on streaming video via its Wi-Fi or GPS connection, Wi-Fi being the faster option.
Battery life received favorable iPad reviews as tests by user groups outlasted the manufacturer's claim.
iPad's manufacturer is touted to be a formidable force to its old rival, possibly even topping it. Whether it will ring true remains to be seen in iPad's ability to go past its limitations and live up to the publicity.
